Food supplements, why use them?

What are food supplements?

During the phases of life we are often put to the strax on stress or everyday life that weakens physical resources, finding ourselves in situations of psychophysical fatigue, thus generating mechanisms of excessive sedentary lifestyle. The desire is to react to this stall by undertaking often demanding physical activities, without succeeding in the initial intent.

To respond to these sensations or to better resume physical or sporty activity after a long pause, sometimes, the only mental charge is not enough and the body, not responding adequately, refuses greater effort thus entering the "protection area".

On the contrary, amateur or professional athletes often ask "too much" to their physique sometimes damaging it even without wanting it and consuming all the natural reserves that the body makes available.

The best way to react to cycles of excessive stress or naturally activate all our resources is without a shadow of doubt the correct diet but most of the time a healthy and balanced diet is not enough to make up for the continuous organic physical stresses to which we submit the our body, especially in intense sports activities.

The "food supplements"They are specific products, containing nutrients not present in food or not sufficiently taken with a normal diet so as to require excessive food intake to satisfy its needs. Supplements are recommended in cases where the body has a lack of certain nutrients: have no properties therapeutic, but serve to integrate a normal diet by completing it.

It is necessary to avoid an unjustified use especially if recommended by people who are not professionals. The laws and directives in the European and national field are countless, such as Directive 2002/45/EC of the European Parliament of 10 June 2002 which defines food supplements "food products intended to integrate the normal diet and which constitute a concentrated source of nutrients or other substances having a nutritional or physiological effect, both monocomposed and multi -compost, in forms of dosage, i.e. in forms of marketing such as capsules, tablets, tablets, pills and the like, dust in sachets, liquids contained in ampoules, Glasses with dropper and other similar forms, of liquids and dust intended to be taken in small unitary quantities ".

The directive specifies that:

  • "The labeling, presentation and advertising of the product do not attribute the therapeutic properties to food supplements or the capacity for preventing or treatment of human diseases, nor do they refer otherwise reference to similar properties" (art. 6, paragraph 2);
  • "In the labeling, presentation and advertising of food supplements do not appear to say that they affirm or imply that a balanced and varied diet is not able to bring nutrients in sufficient quantities in general" (art. 7).

Food supplements for sport

The so -called “Food supplements for sport"Are part of the list of"Foods adapted to intense muscle effort especially for sportsmen", For which the Ministry of Health has issued specific guidelines (circular June 7, 1999, n. 8) which establish that all these products" must be formulated in a confatible way to the nutritional needs for the type of activity carried out and ensure a optimal bioavailability of nutrients made "and can be placed in the following categories:

1. Products aimed at energy integration;

2

3. Products aimed at integrating protein;

4. Products aimed at the integration of amino acids and derivatives;

5. Products containing amino acid derivatives:

6. Other products with nutritional value adapted to intense muscle effort;

7. Combination of the aforementioned products.

How to hire them?

Erroneously, many athletes, or alleged such, ingest supplements at high doses to improve performance, not evaluating that the same improves with a good training in compliance with their potential and the supplements serve to keep us healthy so that we can allow us excellent workouts.

Using food as the only reintegration resource may not be enough. There are amateur athletes who, like champions, train even more than two hours a day for 6-7 days a week. And after these workouts do not think there is the need to encourage recovery by returning to the body the nutritional elements lost without necessarily swallowing enormous quantities of food? It is therefore correct to feed the nutrition with supplements according to a strategy that maintains the body healthy, to encourage a physiological recovery and to fill any food deficits. It is wrong to take incompeters with unsuitable dosages, with the desire to improve performance and with the result of failing in this direction and, in some cases, causing damage to health.

The guidelines of the Ministry of Health suggest that intense workouts need adequate reinstatement that allows you to train best by keeping healthy. (Click on the photo)
